How to Open and Work with Disk Image
A Disk Image is a mirror copy of your entire logical drive or physical device stored as set of files. If you have enough space on another drive, it may be a good idea to create a Disk Image of a drive containing deleted files that you want to recover.
Opening a Disk Image:
- Start Active@ File Recovery and select a drive or physical device that you want to create an image for.
- To open the Create Disk Image dialog box, do one of the following:
- Click Create Image on the toolbar

- Right-click the selected item, and choose Create Image on the context menu
- In the Save In drop-down list, select another physical device or another logical drive.
- Browse to the folder where you want to save the Disk Image.
- To give the Disk Image file a different name, type one in the File Name field.
- Click Save.
The opened disk image appears in the Local System Devices list.
Another way to open a disk image is to locate the .DIM file directly and execute the Open Image command from the context menu.
You may treat the opened Disk Image folder and its contents the same way that you treat other device nodes in the list. You may follow the same steps to scan the folder, then search for files and folders to be recovered.
Note
If you've created a raw disk image using other third-party utilities (like copying sectors from WinHex) it can be opened with Active@ File Recovery! Just choose Any Raw Image as the disk image type in the Open File standard dialog and you can view all files on the disk.
